Adult Stem Cells

The use of adult stem cells is one of the most promising areas of developing medical treatment. An adult stem cell (ASC) is a multipotent stem cell in adult humans that is used to replace cells that have died or lost function. It is an undifferentiated cell present in differentiated tissue. Nonsenescent ASC’s can renew themselves and can specialize to yield all cell types present in the tissue from which it originated including hematopoetic (blood), neural, endothelial, muscle, mesenchymal, gastrointestinal, and epidermal cells. Adult stem cells can be harvested from bone marrow, subcutaneous fat or blood. These adult stem cells can then be stored for future use and eventually reintroduced systemically (intravenously) or locally (inside a joint, e.g.) to treat a wide variety of ailments or to simply prevent diseases including aging. Adult stem cells can also be used for cosmetic purposes in topical formulations or as part of simple procedures to the appearance.

Regenerative and Sports Medicine and Rand McClain, D.O. are collaborating with American CryoStem (OTCQB:CRYO) and Personal Cell Sciences to advance the research, collection, banking and clinical use of ASC’s both in the United States and internationally.

Through their collaboration and the first approved IND (Innovative New Drug) application, Dr. McClain and American Cryostem doctor partners are currently slated to be the only physicians in the U.S. to legally offer ASC collection and treatment through either adipose tissue or blood (or both). Much research has been conducted on the effectiveness of stem cell therapy in both chronic and acute diseases, as well as injury. About Stem Cells

Stem cells are the building blocks of the body

Your body is made up of two different types of cells, somatic cells and stem cells.

Somatic cells form the body we see and feel and help it function. There are trillions of these specialized cells in your body: heart cells, lung cells, red blood cells and so forth each carry out a specialized function to keep it running.

Stem cells repair tissues that have been damaged through normal wear and tear, injury and disease, or poor lifestyle choices. These unspecialized cells have a restorative quality that allows them to renew tissues by replacing somatic cells that have worn out or no longer function at optimal levels.1

What are Stem Cells?

Stem cells are your body’s internal repair system

You may already know about storing blood from a baby’s umbilical cord, which contains young stem cells, for therapeutic use in the event of serious illness. But what you may not know is that adults can collect and store their own stem cells too. While your own cord blood may never have been collected, you can still take advantage of the restorative power of your adult stem cells by collecting and storing them now. Adult stem cells have unique characteristics that allow them to repair damaged tissues in your body.

Remarkable ability to repair, renew and replenish

Your adult stem cells are unspecialized, which means they have the potential to develop into many different cell types. Unspecialized stem cells can replicate and each new cell has the potential to either remain a stem cell or become another type of cell with a specialized function, such as a red blood cell or a brain cell.1

Stem cells can continue to divide for a long period of time to repair and replace worn out tissue. Because stem cells can divide many times, they can produce many cells. Why Store Stem Cells?

As you age, so do your stem cells

Your stem cells continue to divide throughout your life to keep your body operating in optimal condition. However, the DNA contained within those cells can become damaged. Stem cells with damaged DNA are unable to effectively repair and maintain the body’s tissues, contributing to the aging process. Excessive damage can cause rapid aging of cells and organs, leading to a poor quality of life and health.1

Accumulated damage to cells can also lead to cellular senescence, a permanent condition where cells stop dividing (or replicating) altogether. Senescence contributes heavily to aging and the diseases of aging.1

Preparation

Preparing your stem cells for collection

The collection program begins with finding out some basic information about you, your lifestyle and the current state of your physical health. One of our providers will interview you and record your medical history. We’ll take note of any diseases that may be prevalent in your family, such as cardiac disease, cancer, diabetes, neurologic diseases or autoimmune disorders.

You will also undergo a complete physical examination conducted by one of our providers. Your blood will be drawn so we can complete a full blood cell count, including blood typing and screening. Once these simple tests are completed and you are cleared for collection, your provider will work with you to schedule your collection date within the next 30 days.

Our expertly trained team will walk you through the steps, and of course, will be on hand to answer any questions you may have throughout the entire process.

Enhancing your cell health for optimal collection

We want your cells to be in the best condition possible prior to collection. healthycell™ plus is a patented cell health formula created by CellHealth™ Institute. healthycell™ plus has over 90 of the highest quality phytonutrients, vitamins and minerals to help create the ideal environment for your cells. Getting those cells to move

Three days prior to your collection date, you will receive your first injection of Neupogen® (filgrastim), an FDA approved stem cell mobilizing agent that has been used safely in patients for more than 20 years. You will receive a once-daily injection (the amount of which will be based on your weight) for three days at our office in Santa Monica, CA.

Neupogen is a granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) that mimics a naturally occurring process in your body stimulating the bone marrow to release stem cells into your peripheral (circulating) blood. Not only does this aid in collecting a larger number of stem cells, but our most recent research has shown that Neupogen tends to mobilize only high quality stem cells. This is extremely important since, as we age, a higher number of our cells become senescent (non-replicating). Neupogen mobilizes those stem cells that are high functioning and optimally replicating (non-senescent), which allows for a healthier stem cell collection for you to use in the future.

Collection

Collection from blood

After completing cell mobilization therapy with Neupogen®, your stem cells will be collected from your blood via apheresis, a safe and virtually painless process similar to donating blood.

Apheresis collects your blood through two intravenous lines, separates the stem cells from other blood cells, then returns your red blood cells back to your body. This process lasts approximately three hours, during which you can relax comfortably with access to WiFi, teleconference capabilities or entertainment services such as Netflix.

Collection of your stem cells with this technique yields all 3 stem cell types and also what we call non senescent or very healthy stem cells, a result not normally found with bone marrow collection.

Collection from fat (Mesenchymal stem cell collection)

Your stem cells from fat can be collected in two manners. They can be collected at the same time you undergo apheresis after completion of cell mobilization with Neupogen™. This theoretically will yield a better quality from stem cells from fat. Your stem cells from fat can also be collected without mobilization via a simple liposuction procedure under local anestesia. Collected adipose tissue is sent to our laboratory for processing and storage. They are then available to you upon your request.

Personal Q & A session

Dr. McClain will be available during your collection to share research on cellular health, stem cells and cellular nutrition. You will also have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have about stem cells, their collection and storage process, or even the future of therapies using stem cells.

Where you go for the procedure

The procedure itself will take place at our headquarters, Regenerative and Sports Medicine located in Santa Monica, CA.

Our facility is located less than 10 miles from Los Angeles International Airport. We can arrange transportation and accommodations for you if necessary. Your normal daily activities can be resumed immediately following your collection.

How did your cells do?

Approximately four weeks following your stem cell collection, our medical team will contact you to review your stem cell collection results. Determined by advanced flow cytometry, these collection results include the total number, and, in the case of those collected via apheresis, of various stem cell types. You will receive your personal stem cell results as well as contact information for Regenerative and Sports Medicine, should you need your stem cells in a medical emergency.

When will your stem cells be available for use

At present processing of adipose tissue derived stem cells takes approximately 3-4 weeks. Stem cells obtained via apheresis are available for use (injection into joints, e.g.) the day of the procedure and any day thereafter. Note however that in all cases, once stem cells are stored, except in emergency, the time it takes to have them returned and processed for treatment (typically 2-5 business days) must be considered.

Storage

A lifetime of safe and secure storage

Once your stem cells have been collected, they will be securely stored in liquid nitrogen vapor at minus 180 degrees Celsius in a state-of-the-art cryopreservation facility. Our chosen facilities, New York Blood Bank for apheresed stem cells and American Cryostem for adipose derived stem cells, are secured with continuous monitoring and alarm systems, back-up generators and cooling systems, and is compliant with strict FDA cGMP guidelines. Your stem cell collection will be stored and traced through a system designed to return stem cells only to the patient from whom they were collected—you.

Because there are different ways to use stem cells in therapy, your cells will be stored in varying amounts:

  • Twenty 5-mL cryovials to allow convenient access to a small amount of your cells for use in future regenerative therapies
  • One 100-mL bag, for use as a full immune reconstitution in cases of medical emergency

Your stem cells will always be there for you

In the event that you need your stem cells, simply call the number on your Regenerative and Sports Medicine collection card and your cells will be made available to you. Regenerative and Sports Medicine will ensure that your stem cells are transported using state-of-the-art equipment so they arrive safe and ready to be used. Through its affiliation with PCT (Progenitor Cell Therapy), Regenerative and Sports Medicine offers emergency, on-demand medical transportation of stored cells via a specialty air carrier serving over 100 cities worldwide.
