Testosterone Therapy Q & A

What is testosterone therapy?

Testosterone therapy increases levels of the male sex hormone, testosterone, in your body if they’re too low.

Men make testosterone in their testes, the reproductive glands that produce sperm. A woman’s ovaries also produce small quantities of testosterone, which works in combination with the female sex hormone estrogen.

Testosterone is responsible for male sex organ growth and development. It’s essential for men’s health and well-being. Some of the other functions testosterone is responsible for include:

  • Building muscle mass
  • Bone density
  • Fertility
  • Sex drive
  • Red blood cell production
  • Fat distribution

In healthy men, normal testosterone levels measure between 350 ng/dL (nanograms per deciliter) and 1,000 ng/dL. In healthy women, normal testosterone levels are between 15ng/dL and 70ng/dL.

How is testosterone measured?

The Regenerative & Sports Medicine team performs a simple blood test to measure your testosterone levels. The results, which only take a couple of days, show your total and free testosterone levels (free testosterone is the amount of hormone your body can easily access).

If your total or free testosterone isn’t within the optimal range, you may require testosterone therapy. The team will discuss with you the benefits of testosterone therapy so you can decide together if this treatment is right for you.

What is testosterone therapy?

The Regenerative & Sports Medicine team uses testosterone therapy to rebalance low levels of testosterone (low T). They treat patients with low T using injections or creams.

Testosterone gels and creams can be messy, and some people find them less convenient than injections. Testosterone injections are typically more potent as well. Because of their direct path to your muscle tissues, injections are also fast-acting.

The team controls the amount of testosterone in each injection carefully, so you can be more confident about how much your body is absorbing. Creams and gels also require drying time, but you can shower, exercise, or have sex after an injection.

What are the benefits of testosterone therapy?

Benefits of testosterone therapy depend on several factors, but may include:

  • Increased energy levels
  • Decreased irritability
  • Lifting of depression
  • Improved muscle mass
  • Increased strength
  • Heightened sexual desire
  • Clearer thinking
  • Sharper memory
  • Increased motivation
  • Better erections
  • Reduced body fat

To optimize your body fat-to-muscle ratio, you should also follow a healthy diet and exercise program.
